What's in My Ear!

I have loved the punk band, Gossip, for years! The lead singer, Beth Ditto is one of my all-time fashion icons and I love her voice to pieces! The band's sound is like Mahalia Jackson singing with Billy Idol's band- it is totally soul and 80's beats and bass.

This Friday, I am seeing the band LIVE at Terminal 5. Here are some of my favorite Gossip tunes.

Diva of the Week: Bette Midler

Thank you Val Underwood for introducing me to the work of one of my favorite divas! I have loved Bette Midler since Beaches. I love visiting her Wicked themed park on 150th Street and even met her last year when she visited Harlem Academy.

HPAF: Best of Broadway at Tiffany & Co.

Tonight was my first performance with the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival. Along with a group of 7 talented performers, I sang at an HPAF fundraiser at Tiffany & Co titled "Best of Broadway." It was fantastic. The program offered selections from Carousel, Last 5 Years, How to Succeed in Business and more! Angie Solomon gave a cheerful performance of "Glitter and Be Gay" covered in over $100K in diamonds on loan from Tiffany & Co.

I sang "Taylor the Latte Boy" and a trio from Loesser's "How to Succeed"-and had a blast. The audience was so warm and welcoming. After the show we nibbled on some pupu and tasted some great champagne with the guests. Everyone has such a great time! The folks at T& Co. gave us gorgeous leis to welcome us to Waimea and gorgeous patent leather luggage tags. I had such a great time rehearsing for this performance with our coaches, Val Underwood and Tim Long. What a great kickoff to the Festival.

Lashes

I always wanted to grow up and be the kind of woman who wore fake lashes everyday. I also wanted to wear long lace dusters and maribou heels around the house.

In summary, I think I always wanted to be Zsa Zsa Gabor.

Going to Hawaii

I was invited to the 2009 Hawaii Performing Arts Festival in Waimea, HI to work with Composer-in-Residence Ricky Ian Gordon. I will be spending July in Hawaii singing and tanning and eating lots of SPAM(ok, not really with the SPAM).

I am so excited to work with him-I have been a huge fan since hearing Audra McDonald singing "Song for a dark girl" on her debut album, Way Back to Paradise way back in 1998. His music is absolutely gorgeous and poignant and NOW!! It is a dream to just meet him-but to work through his music with him--is BEYOND!!!

Plus, I will be in Hawaii---ahhhh I can just picture it-me vocalizing using the rhythms of the ocean as a metronome.

So excited!! Time for some dress shopping!
